Reddit Username Checker
Reddit usernames are permanent. There is no rename button, no paid rename, no appeal — the only fix for a bad username is a brand-new account with zero karma and zero history. And if you run a community, the subreddit name is permanent too. Check the name before you create anything.
Check Your Name Free →The 4 checks
- Reddit naming rules: usernames must be 3–20 characters, using letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens. A name outside those rules cannot be created at all — check the format before you build a posting history around it.
- Is the name actually free: search u/ plus the exact name on Reddit. An account page that exists — even with no posts — means the name is taken forever. Reddit does not free up taken usernames on request.
- Username vs display name: your display name can be changed any time; your username cannot. If you plan to be known by a brand, the username is the part that has to be right — the display name will not save a bad one.
- Trademark pre-screen for the name: if the name backs a real business or brand — a product, a community you plan to monetize — run a trademark pre-screen. A username can pass Reddit's rules while colliding with a registered mark, and that is the dispute that forces rebrands. This is general information, not legal advice.
Username rules that actually matter
- Assume it is forever: no rename means the joke name, the typo, and the old fandom tag follow you into every serious post. Choose the name your future self would still use.
- Match your brand everywhere else: the same name on Reddit, X, YouTube and your .com makes you findable and credible. A different Reddit handle fragments your audience.
- Subreddit names are permanent too: community names (r/yourname) are 3–21 characters and cannot be changed after creation. If you plan to run a community, check that name with the same care.
FAQ
Can I change my Reddit username later?
No. Reddit does not offer username changes under any circumstances. The only option is creating a new account, which loses all karma, post history and community standing.
Can NameCheck check Reddit usernames?
NameCheck's free check covers social handle format and a trademark pre-screen for any name — Reddit usernames included. The $9 Clearance Report adds the full trademark risk breakdown, all 12 ranked alternatives with a live .com verdict for each, and the filing classes you'd use.
Is a Reddit username the same as a trademark?
No. A username is a platform account name; a trademark is a legal right. One does not grant the other. This is general information, not legal advice.
