Business Name Ideas
Good names aren’t found — they’re generated, then filtered. The filter is what matters: domain, social handles, and trademark. Below are five patterns that produce names that actually clear, plus how to test each one in 30 seconds.

- Category blend: a category word + your seed word (e.g. velvet + pine → velvetpine, oak + nest → oaknest). Blends feel brandable and clear more often than single dictionary words.
- Category suffix: your seed + studio / supply / lab / co / works / atelier. The suffix narrows the trademark field and usually frees the .com.
- Action prefix: get- / try- / use- / hello- + your seed. A classic for apps and shops when the bare .com is taken.
- Vowel-drop / shortened: drop one vowel or shorten a long word (only if it stays pronounceable). Shorter names are more ownable — but don’t mangle it past recognition.
- Coined word: invent a word that sounds like your category (e.g. a soft sound for beauty, a hard sound for fitness). Coined names are the easiest to trademark — nothing else means the same thing.
What to avoid
- Single dictionary words (“Apple”, “Nest”, “Bloom”) — almost always taken, premium-priced, and hard to defend.
- Near-misses of famous brands (“Nikea”, “Adidaz”) — one letter away is still confusingly similar. See Is My Brand Name Trademarked?.
- Hard-to-spell / hard-to-say names — if customers can’t spell it after hearing it once, you’ll lose word-of-mouth. Digits (“4” vs “for”) make this worse.
- Names that lock you into one product (“DenverDogTreats”) — you’ll outgrow it. Pick a name with room to expand.
How to test an idea in 30 seconds
- Type the candidate into the NameCheck homepage with your category.
- Read the Launch Score + stamp: green light needs a free .com and a low trademark risk.
- If it’s taken or risky, don’t tweak it to death — take one of the 12 ranked alternatives on your results page. Each has a one-tap .com re-check.
- When one clears all three (domain + handles + trademark), register the .com and claim the handles the same day.
FAQ
How many ideas should I generate?
Start with 10–15 candidates across at least 3 patterns above. Most single-pattern lists converge on the same taken names — variety is what finds a clear one.
Should I use an AI name generator?
Generators are fine for raw ideas, but they don’t check anything. Every AI suggestion still needs the 3-part test: domain availability + handles + trademark. NameCheck does all three in one pass.
What if I love a name that’s taken?
Love is not a clearance strategy. Use the alternatives: a two-word variant or a suffix usually keeps the feel and clears. The $9 Clearance Report packages your 12 ranked alternatives with filing classes and a next-step checklist.
