Check Domain Availability
Before you fall in love with a name, check whether the domain is actually free. A name can look “available” on Google while the .com was registered years ago — and the .com is the one customers type from memory.
Check My Domain Free →How NameCheck checks a domain
- .com / .net — registry (RDAP): we query the Verisign registry directly. 200 = registered, 404 = no record (registerable). This is the strongest signal a free tool can give.
- .io / .co / .app / .shop — DNS signal: we probe public DNS. No DNS record usually means unregistered, but only the registrar’s checkout is the final word.
- Alternatives on the spot: if your .com is taken, your results page shows 12 ranked alternatives, each with a one-tap .com re-check.
What to do if your .com is taken
- Don’t buy the “premium” .com on impulse. A $2,000 “premium” domain is rarely worth it for a new shop. A good two-word name with a free .com beats a one-word name you overpaid for.
- Add a prefix or suffix: get-, try-, use- + your name, or your name + studio / supply / lab / co. NameCheck’s alternatives already rank these patterns for you.
- Try a different TLD — with eyes open: .co and .ai work for tech brands, .shop works for stores. But expect some customers to still type .com, so keep the .com version in mind when you pick.
- Check handles + trademark before you commit: a free .co means nothing if the Instagram handle is taken or a famous mark blocks you. Run the full check on the homepage — domain + social + trademark in one pass.
“Available” vs “registerable” vs “safe to use”
These are three different things. Available = the registry has no record right now. Registerable = you can buy it at a registrar today (same thing, plus price and timing). Safe to use = no one holds a conflicting trademark in your category. Only the third one keeps you from getting a takedown letter. That’s why NameCheck pairs every domain verdict with a trademark pre-screen.
FAQ
Is the domain check really live?
Yes. .com / .net go to the Verisign registry (RDAP) at check time — never guessed, never cached from a stale list.
If the .com shows “available”, can someone else grab it first?
Yes. Availability is first-come, first-served. If you like a name and the .com is free, register it the same day.
Why does the check also look at social handles and trademark?
Because a domain alone doesn’t make a brand usable. If @yourname is taken on Instagram or a famous mark is confusingly similar, you’ll rebrand anyway. See also: Is My Business Name Taken? and Is My Brand Name Trademarked?
What does the $9 report add?
The free check gives you the live verdict. The $9 one-time Clearance Report packages it into a keepable document: domain verdicts across 6 TLDs with sources, handle checks, trademark pre-screen, 12 ranked alternatives, filing classes, and a next-step checklist.
